Reading - September- October The 5th graders were introduced to their new reading series,Into Reading. The series is grouped into modules with 3 stories in each. In September, students began with "Inventors at Work. In October, the students will cover "What a Story" and "Natural Disasters." Each module features a different genre of literature. Later in the year students will have a novel study.
Language Arts - September- October The first longer piece the students completed was titled " Summer Memories." This was a two paragraph writing piece. Students then began working on their narrative stories which are more of a challenge with 5 paragraphs. They enjoy getting to use their imaginations. To top off the month , students will do a shorter piece on Halloween.
November In reading students completed another nonfiction unit which dealt with the Wild West. This introduced the students to a period we will study in social studies , the Westward Expansion.
December Reading The 5th graders took a break from their reading series and are reading the novel,Hound Dog True. They are enjoying the novel. Language Arts The students are writing a persuasive essay on whether they choose a real or artificial tree.
January The students enjoyed their nivel study. We will be returning to the HMH Into reading series with a module on green awareness. In language arts a fun projet is in store for the students. They will write a narrative about beinf trapped in a snowglobe.
February In reading students learned about exciting discoveries and interesting explorations. The writing assignment for the month is a persuasive essay. Students will argue their case for or against a snow day or e-learning day.
March During the month of March students dove into a non-fiction module and a poetry module in reading. Students learned about the Terra Cotta Army and the Mars Rovers. In language arts students began working on a research paper that was a collaboration with Mrs. Filbin and Mrs. Stasaitis. The students chose a Wonder of the World that interested them and began researching it.
April Students will take as break from our reading series and complete a novel study. The novel this time will be Hatchet,by Gary Paulsen. This is an interesting story from the adventure genr. In language arts, students will begin writing their research paper that they prepared notes and an outline for. Later in the month studentess will begin writing some poetry.
