August - September Students are using a the series this year, Impact Social Studies, U.S. History- Making a New Nation. The series has two components: the Journal (soft cover workbook), the Companion (hard cover text). There will be an online component soon. The first unit of study will be the Native Peoples present on the North American continent . Next students will be delving into the European explorers.
October- November As we get further into our study of American history, students will be learning about the Age of Exploration. In November the students will learn the colonization of the Nort American continent.
December This month the students are learning about the colonial period. The colonies will soon start moving toward independence from Great Britain.
January Students learned about the Stamp Act and other taxes. They will continue to learn about the events that led to the American Revolution.
February This month finds the classes learning about the end of the Revolutionary War and about the new nation's struggle to enact a effective government. The students enjoyed the program "Liberty Kids." This PBS program enriched their understanding of that time period.
March and April The colonies ave declared their independence from Great Britain. The work of building a government and creating a Constitution was the next period the students learned about. Returning from spring break, they will continue learning about the westward expansion.
May Students will finish up the year in social studies learning about the Civil War and Reconstruction.
